Two Dukes that started as classmates, reconnected in Richmond, and became best friends for life.
He fell for her obnoxiously blue coat and she for his habit of skateboarding in suits. Star-crossed between different grades and friend groups, their interactions were limited to a media history class and trips to Raleigh with the advertising club. Thanks to Ad Club, the two bonded over commercials and cranberry juice. But ultimately, they went their separate ways, Gunter graduating in fall of 2018 and Isabel shortly after in spring of ‘19.
Cue the Facebook post. Isabel was two-weeks graduated when she posted what was next—off to Richmond, VA for more school. What seemed like any other well-wishing comment was Gunter’s: “Congratulations!!! That is so so cool! When are you headed to Richmond?”. Unbeknownst to Isabel, Gunter had recently moved to Richmond for work. To Gunter, that post meant a chance to finally take that blue-coated, blue-eyed girl to dinner. And that’s just what he did three months later.
A week after their first date in Richmond, they made it official, on the eve of Isabel’s first day at Brandcenter. He played video games while she wrote radio spots. They ate lots of Hibachi Box, and Gunter let it slide when Isabel fell asleep watching Captain America. After a year of Brandcenter and lots of COVID curveballs, they moved in together.

Over their second year together, Gunter slowly converted his car, and Isabel, into campers. From national parks to parking lots, they enjoyed every makeshift memory. So it was only fitting when Gunter proposed on Skyline Drive coming home from a JMU football game—It involved a trip back to where they met, a dinner at the same place they shared their first date, and of course, their signature car-camper. And for those who are wondering, yes, the car-camper will one day have room for a kid or two, too!
